Dum Dum Dum - PART II

..... the wedding saga continues

27-11-07

---------

This was the day before the marriage. As per Tamil Hindu Brahmin rituals, the day before the marriage, the bride and bridegroom are cleansed, so that they could handed over to each other in the most pure form. This is known as "Vratham". The bride and groom need to fast until this ritual is completed. Also during this process a sacred yellow thread is tied around the wrists of both the bride and groom, after which they are not allowed to step outside the mandap. Kewl na?

Well, for start I woke up at 3:00 a.m. in the morning, as the vratham was supposed to start at 6:00 a.m. Santosh also woke up around the same time. This is when the first blow struck. Well, usually myself and Santosh plan things much in advance, so much so that we plan what to wear for the wedding. Err if you are mistaken we had planned what to wear at my sister's wedding. If you all think it is very easy, please hold on.

Well, our community is known for the different rituals we have in the same day. Each day we would have at least 2 different occasions when we would need to be dressed. So for each of the occasion we had planned what we were going to wear. On the Vratham day Santosh had planned to wear his blue "Provouge" shirt and his fav pair of Lee jeans. But guess what, I wasn't able to locate his fav pair of jeans. Santosh was very upset. My mom and dad immediately came to the rescue as they could not bear the sight of their "Mutha Mappillai" (first son-in-law) down and upset. And behold came a new "Jarigai Veshti". The blue Provouge shirt and the Veshti suited him pretty well. So all was settled now, but still I was upset that being the meticulous packer that I am, I forgot my hubby's fav pair of jeans. Che, "Shame on me". When we came back from the trip that is when I realised that my MIL had placed Santosh's jeans in my cup-board . Hmph !

During the vratham, there is a ritual wherein a mixture of pulses are kept in a tray and all "Sumangalis" are called upon to sprinkle some water on them. This is known as "Paligai Thelikarathu". Hmm...now this was the first time after getting married that I go to do this. I thanked Santosh silently for giving me such a status, as I have grown up seeing all the elders do this and have secretly longed for such occasions.

These pulses are kept aside until the marriage is over and on the day after the marriage when these pulses have started germinating, they are washed with water. This is known as "Paligai Karaikarathu".

Now the schedule of program for that day was Vratham, immediately followed by Engagement and then post lunch in the evening the reception. Now the bride i.e. Chinnu and me were extremely happy with this as it gives us loads of time to get ready for the reception.

Well generally these days, reception is the occasion that the bride can get dressed something in a modern attire. So instead of a Kanchipuram saree, it could be a ghagra-choli or a legenga or a designer saree. But Chinnu still stuck to the traditional Kanchipuram saree, with an idea that she could accessorise differently. (well I also did the same stuff for my marriage). With the ample time available in the schedule, myself and Chinnu had some big plans for the reception in terms of hair-do and makeup.

But, expect the unexpected ! The Vratham for the groom's side happened quite late, due to technical reasons (vathiyar was late) and hence the engagement was postponed to the evening. It had to start at 4:00 p.m. The reception was supposed to start by 7:00 p.m. But Chinnu turned out to be clever than I expected. She had roped in the "vathiyar" on her side and had requested him to complete the proceedings of the engagement by 4:45 p.m. so that leaves her with enough time to get ready for the reception. We were relieved.

But then if Chinnu had only 1.5 hours for getting ready, what will happen to my dressing up plans. If you ppl didn't get it, picture this: one make-up artist, 3 ladies to dress up, among them 1 being the bride, the other the bride's sister and mom. 1.5 hours is it possible? No way ! That's when my contingency planning came into picture, I thought if I could skip the engagement, then I would have enough time to get ready before Chinnu comes in. So I skipped the engagement and got ready in my designer blue saree and make-up. Chinnu came in promptly and she was ready in time.

In the meantime my mom came in started looking out for "a bag". Well let me tell you about the characteristic trait that has passed on from my mom to me through the DNA. We both have a habit of keeping very important things in a "very very very" safe place. Once we have done that job we usually forget where the place is. So here she is in the middle of the bride's room searching for a bag. Now I got really annoyed at her and asked her what did it contain. She looked back at me teary-eyed and said "paisa ma". Thats when we all realised the importance of the bag and frantic searches started. Myself, patti, periamma(eldest) and amma were the search party. After 30 minutes we all declared that the bag wasn't there in the room. Now I must admit my dad took it a bit cool and Chinnu, hats off to her, she also took it pretty cool. I started crying, then next in line grandma and then amma. I think my mom realised that now that the bag is gone, there is no point fretting over it and started getting ready. Though her face did give away her emotions ! But it was after the reception that we found that my mom had left the bag back home when she had gone there in the afternoon. Back to relief !

The reception dinner was pretty sumptuous with an amazing spread. Everyone enjoyed it and were in full praises. My dad was beaming ! The caterer (VCS) and my family has a long association. It all started with my SIL's wedding which was their first major venture and then my wedding and then Chinnu's. My dad is pretty consistent, the wedding hall, caterer, vathiyar were all retained from my wedding for Chinnu's, coz they were the best.

So, all in all an action packed day , so much action and masala fit to be a blockbuster ! Wat say ppl?

28-11-07
---------

Well, the D-day had arrived. Chinnumani was getting all decked up and I was helping her getting done. So after the "Kasi Yaathirai", the time had come for the garlanding. Well, this is a fun thing as the bride's and groom's uncles help the bride and groom garland each other. During this time the fun element comes to picture, so they also pull away the bride and groom so that each of them have a tough time garlanding.

Usually they lift the bride and groom on their shoulders . But we are talking about the heavy weights. Well Chinnu and Mr.Narayanan are on the healthier side, and uncles were also old, so Santosh and Sai pitched in and made sure that the fun element is not missed. Santosh was obviously on Chinnu's side and Sai gave his helping hand to the groom's side. Good fellas.

"Oonjal" was preceded with a heavy breakfast for all of us and then the wedding proceedings began. This one went on well with no glitch except for that the bride's sister was very emotional (he he he that's me). Somehow, watching my lil sis getting married and the groom taking her away from my mom's home was very very emotional. By the grace of Almighty things went on well and Chinnu officially became Mrs. Chinnu Narayanan.

So, you all thought that was it, nope guys............there is still "Nalungu"...... I think it wouldn't be fair if I don't dedicate one whole post to it......

So until next time Ciao..............................

Dum Dum Dum - PART I

I guess nobody is bothered about my posts. But anyways I will explain my prolonged absence. My younger sis got married on November 28th. So I was on a loooooong leave (Oops not so long). Marriages are always a special occasions. Especially if it is your own bro's/sister's marriage.

24-11-07
---------

I reached Chennai on 24th November(Saturday). My parents and my sis were eagerly waiting for me as well as my hubby. Santosh joined us on Sunday as he works on Saturdays. My periamma, periappa and my darling grandmom were already there. The first day I just "accompanied" my sis to the salon and then after we came back she was ready for her mehendi session. Well my SIL introduced me to a very talented , artistic and sweet lady who does a great job with mehendi. She was the same person who had come down for my marriage too. After my sis, I was next in line for the mehendi. My periamma also joined the line. This was her first time that she had put on mehendi (cho chweet). Those days we had only those chappas, the round ones. But they have a beauty of their own. My mom also wanted to join the mehendi brigade but as the ever sacrificing mom she refrained from doing so, as she had to help her daughter the little bride all smeared in mehendi . The mehendi on Chinnu ( that's my sis!) was awesome.

25-11-07

----------

Got up early the next day as hubby dear was supposed to arrive. But as usual the train was pretty late and as he had to carry all my luggage as well, hmmm . But before him my chinnamost mami( I have 3 mamis :-) ) accompanied by her effervescent daughter Kavya arrived. Well what do I tell about my cousin. She is energy personified. She is also the go-getter type, not the kinda kids who fuss. She dances pretty well. Myself and Santosh had made a deal with her that she would dance at the "Nalungu". We then went out to inspect our apartment in Pallavaram which is under construction. So pretty much that was it for that day.

26-11-07
---------

This day was very hectic for us as myself and Santosh had lot of plans. We set out in the morning after a hearty breakfast . Luckily one of Santosh's friend had given him a car (Santro, a/c) , so we had no problems in commuting around. To add to my glee, the car's music system was amazing and he had a collection of latest Tamil songs. Nowadays I am hooked on to the new "Polladhavan" engeyum eppothum remix. So all set, we raided the streets of Usman road and went until Egmore as I wanted to buy some bangles to go with my reception designer saree (too much a theriyudha? it is all in the game).

I must tell you about this store called "Dreams come true". They have everything , except for gold and diamonds , that a girl could ever dream for. This is highly recommended place where you don't mind shelling out some extra bucks for awesome glass/metal bangles, bindis etc. Let me come back to my story. Went around for some time, but couldn't find any bangles that would match my saree. But then I really liked this set of four bangles studded with white stones. It was pretty expensive but Santosh was in a nice mood and asked me to get it (paavam santosh) . These pair of bangles were hugely compilmented by everyone including my Dubai akka. I got 2 pair of bangles also for my little cousin (Kavya). Couple of bindis also found place in my shopping bag. Then we set out to Pondy Bazaar to get Chinnu's Kemp alangaram set, the ones she is supposed to wear during her wedding alongwith the wedding saree which is known as the kurai pudavai.

After all this Santosh dropped me at home and set out to meet his friends. In the meantime I packed all my stuff and ready to go to the mandapam. Santosh came back just in time very tired and he told me that Chennai traffic was pretty bad. Driving through traffic jams really gets on your nerves. I pity people staying in Bangalore. All said and done we reached the mandapam and guess what it was the same mandapam that Santosh and me got married "Shree Hall" in Burkit road.

I got really nostalgic, but since people all were really tired especially Santosh, we settled down and immediately hit the sack as tomorrow was going to be a long day.

Om Shanti Om - Movie Review

Actors - SRK, Deepika Padukone, Shreyas Talpade, Arjun Rampal
Director- Farah Khan
Music - Vishal & Shekar

After having been struck by Farah Khan's spoofy film "Main Hoon Na", myself and hubby dear were eagerly waiting to watch this movie. Sharukh's six-pack also was very very tempting. We wanted to watch this movie asap. The fact that we got tickets for a night show and each ticket costed us Rs 150/- didn't deter us from watching this movie.

The movie has the reincarnation drama with generous helping of humor. OSO is Karz directed by Manmohan Desai. There is also a reference to Manhoman Desai in the movie.

OSO starts in the 70's where Subhash Ghai is directing the song Om Shanti Om. Here Om Prakash Makhija (SRK) and his friend Pappu Master (Shreyas Talpade) are junior artists. The ever struggling junior artists who always dream to be heroes. Om has a huge crush on the Superstar heroine of those times Shanti Priya (Deepika).

During one of the shoots Om saves Shanti from a fire accident. As a gesture Shanti agrees to spend an evening with Om. The movie's best song (Tum ko paya hai) plays as Om goes all fida on Shanti. Then he comes to know that Shanti is secretly married to the vicious producer Prakash Mehra (Arjun Rampal). Shanti is fighting for her recognition as Mehra's wife. In turn she gets killed by him and Om also dies in an attempt to save her. Well in the other half the same junior artist becomes the biggest star of his times and takes revenge on the producer.

Now things said about the plot, I would like to highlight the strengths of the movie:

1. backdrop i.e. sets in the first half
2. costume in the first half. Everyone , from the background artists were wearing clothes of that era and the detailing was given a lot of importance.
3. SRK's six -pack abs in the song Dard-e-disco
4. The writers make light of everyone and everything in sight, packing the first half with so many jokes and movie references. Even the South Indian film industry was not spared by Farah.
5. When the credits are rolled out in the end, everyone from the spot boy to the light man are brought in the front of the camera, which I felt was a very nice way of giving credit to. Kudos to SRK and Farah for this novel idea.
6. Credits to Farah for bringing Sheryas in the commercial stream, because he is so good an actor that we do not want to watch him in just few off-beat films.

Having said about the pluses, the major flaw I could say was the spoof was not very much on the face and so the fun element was missed out unlike Main Hoon Na. Sparing for some 3 songs the other songs in this movie are forgettable.

So that's it folks from my end. OSO is a watchable movie.

Rating : **1/2 (Watchable)

Jab We Met - Movie Review

Actors - Kareena Kapoor, Shahid Kapur
Director - Imtiaz Ali
Music - Pritam Singh

"Jab We Met " is a cute love story. Well you would heard this by this time now. But let me tell you it is a FUN film to watch. There are lot of stuff missing in this movie, which now has become a trademark of a pot-boiler:

*item number
*extravagance be it for locales or costume.
*unnecessary rona-dhona
*dream sequence

So, the movie is quite endearing and closer to life. But still the director has taken some liberties to move away from logic like where Kareena gets down from the train to get Shahid back into the train and in turn misses it.

Well moving to the story, the story is very simple Geet (Kareena) ,a happy -go-lucky chatterbox girl whose childhood dream is to get married in life, meets Aditya (Shahid), a sober disillusioned businessman on a train. Aditya has boarded the train after he has almost decided to end his life, that is when he meets Geet. Both end up missing the train. Geet informs him that it is his responsibility to take her to home-town Bhatinda. She constantly nags him and frustrated both of them embark on a journey to Bhatinda. Well one thing I would like to mention that the rural Punjab is a scenic beauty with the sarson da keth and etc.

Once they reach Bhatinda Aditya is already in love with Geet. But the twist here is that Geet is already in love with some other guy. Here again our hero helps Geet in getting reunited with her love of life.

I do not want to spoil the movie goers with the full plot. So what happens next and how Geet and Aditya reunite forms the rest of the story.

I think one of the reasons for the success of a movie is a well-written script and well-etched characters. I like Geet's characterisation very much. She is a girl who follows her heart and has no inhibitions at all. If she decides to jump into a river she would and not think about the consequences. I think sometimes we need to let ourselves be carefree and take it easy. After all Life is about Living.

Kareena has done a damn good job. She has portrayed the effervescent character very well. The beauty is she is a chatter-box but doesn't irritate you. Instead makes all of us yearn why we can't be like her.

So that's it folks. I recommend you all to watch this movie.

Rating : *** (Good)

Spirituality and CEO - The connection?

I just read a recent article in TOI about this. The article was about a Spirituality course at IIM-B. Well in IIM-B there is a popular elective course "Spirituality for Global Managers". Kewl stuff.

The whole article is available at this link http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/Mgmt_gyaan_from_CEO_Lord_Krishna/articleshow/2510295.cms

The seed of thought to write this post came to me after I read this article.

"Spirituality and Religion "

Spirituality is not the same as religion and vice versa. You could be either of these or both of them. Confusing na...

Spirituality is Natural. It is inside all of us. We all want to be good in some or the other way. No one really strives to be bad. So as long as the intention to be good exists, I think everyone is spiritual.

Religion is a man made, culture based doctrine that guides it's people in the practice of spirituality. Because religion is man made and culture based, it naturally has some of the rules and taboos of that particular culture built into it. Unfortunately for some, many cultures have chosen to use the fear of God to enforce the man made rules of that culture. And some wonder, how can there be a loving God when so many terrible things happen to some people. Creator gave us free will. No one, no thing, can totally control that which has free will. Although Creator has a great plan for us to be happy, healthy, and good people, He has no control over it. If we chose to follow this great plan, our lives can be wonderful. But there can be sadness or pain or misfortune even if we follow a good spiritual plan. Because that is the flow of life.

I know how difficult it is to accept this. I think if we train our minds that "LIFE" is not always a bag full of goodies, we could lead a very happy life. We would have pain, suffering, failures, disppointments...etc.

But when a mishap occurs to me , the first question that I ask GOD is "Why me?". I hope and pray that the Almighty gives me the strength and maturity to accept that this is also a part of his plan for me.

It is also equally important that we accept the fact that " It is ok to fail". Even when I write this I realise that I am extremely competitive. Anything I do I want it to be the best. I keep pushing myself until I am the best.

Oops, I started this blog on a different note and ended it in a tangent. Anyways pour in your thoughts ...........

Script writer !!!!

Myself and hubby dear are movie addicts. Whenever time permits we sneak in a movie here and there. I was always fasinated how people bring stories to life. Best example being the movie "Iqbal" and "Malgudi Days".... ever since then I have always had the urge to write a nice story and visualize it.
Suddenly the company annual day was announced and they invited me to be a part of the organization. The high profile management also wanted some culturals to be thrown in for the entertainment. I immediately jumped in and proposed for a skit.
But then what would be the theme of the script ? That was a million dollar question. After a brainstorming discussion, within myself ofcourse :-), I thought the best thing would be a spoof on the age old "masala movie".
After all that is what Farah Khan is doing in all her films till date. So if she can cash on it then we can as well give it a try.
I had a bound script in 2 days. But unfortunately I could not bring in together the casting that I wanted and I was loaded with work. So because of the above reasons "The project got shelved". Analogy could hold good to the movie making business as well as the IT industry. What the heck !

Voila ! I have started a blog. So here goes my script ppl. Bouquets and Brickbats are welcome.

Tension Nahi Lene Ka !
